Arsenal 'start contract talks' with experienced attacker as Gunners break convention with 2029 decision

Arsenal reportedly start talks with one of their experienced attackers over a new contract and could break convention by offering him an extension until 2029.

Arsenal have reportedly commenced conversations with Leandro Trossard over a new long-term contract at the Emirates Stadium.

The 30-year-old's current terms expire in just over a year's time, and there has been talk of a possible transfer to the Saudi Pro League during the summer transfer window.

The upcoming market could represent Arsenal's last chance to recoup a decent fee for the former Brighton & Hove Albion man, who is not a long-term option in the Gunners' attack.

However, Trossard has been a useful asset to Mikel Arteta this season, making a staggering 53 appearances across all competitions and coming up with 10 goals and eight assists in the process.

Even though Arsenal are expected to search for an upgrade on the left-hand side this summer, the Daily Mail claims that the club are now in talks with Trossard's camp over an extension to his current terms.

Trossard's existing deal is understood to include a one-year extension clause until the summer of 2027, but Arsenal are prepared to offer him fresh terms that would keep him on the books until the end of the 2028-29 campaign.

Doing so would see Arsenal break convention when it comes to tying down players in the second half of their careers, as the Gunners are normally loath to offer four or five-year extensions to players aged 30+.

However, club staff are said to have been left highly impressed with Trossard's availability and fitness levels, which have been key to their decision to put a long-term renewal offer on the table.

Trossard has been available for every Arsenal Premier League and Champions League game this season, and he has now registered 28 goals and 21 assists in 121 matches for Arteta's team in all tournaments.

Regardless of Trossard's future, Arsenal will most likely pursue a new left-winger ahead of the 2025-26 season, and the likes of Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams and Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Gittens are thought to be their prime targets on that side.

Arsenal's new sporting director Andrea Berta should not expect any summer holidays this year, as the Gunners chief is facing an incredibly busy summer of incomings, outgoings and contract renewals.

Trossard is just one of several players' situations who will need addressing, a list that also includes fellow wingers Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka, both of whom are out of contract in 2027.

At the other end of the pitch, William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes could leave for nothing in just over two years' time too, and the former has supposedly been courted by Real Madrid for a while.

Furthermore, talks are apparently ongoing with Thomas Partey's entourage over an extension to his terms - which run out this summer - but Arsenal are now believed to have reached a verbal agreement with his successor.
